Instead, we decided to drive down through Washington and maybe check out an island or two.

The weather today totally makes me appreciate what Mother Nature has provided over the last two weeks. The 40 mile an hour winds and pelting rain kept us off the ferries to the San Juan Islands. We ended up on Whidbey Island. The name sounded familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on why. Apparently several movies take place here, including An Officer and a Gentleman ( Naval Air Station Whidbey Island,) the War of the Roses and The Ring. But I recognize Whidbey from The Last Mimzy. To get over here, we crossed Desperation Pass Bridge. It beautifully connects Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands.

A group of sailors led by Joseph Whidbey, part of the Vancouver Expedition, found and mapped Deception Pass on June 7, 1792. Tidal flow through the pass can be rough and swirling, giving early explorers the illusion that the waters were too dangerous to sail.

We attempted to explore Whidbey a bit, dodging branches blown into the road, with windshield wipers on high speed. Andy's suggestion to find a movie theater gave us the perfect destination for the evening.
We saw A Dolphin Tale. In June, when we were in Florida for my brother's wedding, we visited The Clearwater Aquarium where we met Winter, the movie star. She is an amazing dolphin who lost her tail in a fishing accident and had a prosthetic made. The movie is based on her story.
The next morning, we woke up to better weather and got to poke around a bit.

First noticed the smell. Intense pine, only sweeter. Salt water, maybe? We hiked up to Deception Bridge...

Then sat on driftwood and watched the water. So blue. I believe it's the Juan De Fuca Straight.

It's time to start heading south towards the airport. The second leg of our trip begins tonight. It's the Sea Tac exchange. Andy boards the red-eye at 9, home to VT and my mom and dad are due to arrive at 9:50. That gives us an hour or two to make Carlos presentable.
