Hitting the Road: Canada

I have been on many road trips in my life, but I have never done the travel in sweats and sneakers thing. EVER. Today is a 12 hour drive day, and I'm doing it. Cute yoga pants, mind you, but exercise-wear none the less...

It's cool how personalities show themselves on the road. Of the five of us, one of us notices features, natural and man-made,

one of us notices words,
(me)

one of us notices playgrounds and any surface that might be climbable,

one of us notices nothing external unless looking through a camera lens,

and one of us sleeps.

I expected this part of Canada (between Ottawa and the upper peninsula of Michigan) to be barren and ugly, similar to the scraggly landscape between VT and Montreal. It is a pleasant surprise to instead find our surroundings lush with trees and lakes...even a few small mountains. The endless road construction is a bit of a downer, but the bright orange and red signs of autumn make up for it.

We stopped in Sudbury, ON for pizza where I, (after changing out of my comfy travel garb,) made the announcement that this would be the only chain restaurant of the trip. I want to see and taste the country!

After we pulled out of town, Chloe (looking for a chocolate fix) realized she left her kid's meal cookie behind. A couple hours down the road, she found it right where she left it.

Tomorrow we are camping with my oldest friend, Lisa. Anyone have a friend you've known forever, who knows the whole you? I've just been texting with Lisa, who knows everything there is to know, and yet since we are long distance, we have no idea what the other likes to eat or drink. I can't wait to see her!!!

We came and left Canada via bridge. This one from Sault Ste. Marie, ON to Sault Ste. Marie, MI over the Soo Locks.

The Soo Locks are on the St. Mary's River which is the only water connection between Lake Superior and the other Great Lakes. Even though they close between January and March, they still pass around 10,000 ships a year.

Bye, Canada!

We are KOA-bound, camping for the night in Newberry, MI. Looking forward to some game playing...Magic, anyone?
